Mary Lou was the only child of Okley Earl and Genevieve (Hurst) Frakes. She lived in and near DeKalb all of her life. As a young child she and her parents lived with her grandmother, Mollie Martin Hurst, just south of the DeKalb school building.

Mary Lou was married to Nelson Kerr "Sonny" Eastbourn of DeKalb on November 25, 1943 and enjoyed nearly 48 years of marriage. They lived on a large farm southeast of DeKalb. The original farmhouse was greatly enlarged in the 1960s and provided a beautiful country home for Mary Lou and Sonny and their family. Their daughter Linda Sue was born March 25, 1949 and their son Gerald Lynn was born August 18, 1954. During the last several years of Mary Lou's mother's life, Genevieve lived with Mary Lou and Sonny.

Mary Lou died at her home in 2001 after a lengthy illness. Her memorial service was held at the DeKalb Christian Church where she was a lifelong member.
