Nelson "Sonny" Eastbourn was the third of four children of Fred and Lena (Jones) Eastbourn of DeKalb, Missouri. He served his country in World War II and, during the war, married Mary Lou Frakes on November 25, 1943. Their daughter Linda Sue was born in 1949 and son Gerald Lynn in 1954.

Sonny - as he was known throughout life - operated a large and progressive farm southeast of DeKalb, and just south of his brother Frank Eastbourn's farm. He was actively involved in his community's activities, his children's schools, and the DeKalb Christian Church where he was a lifelong member and leader. Sonny's memorial service was held at the DeKalb church and a memorial in his name provided the construction of a new entryway to the church sanctuary, protecting worshipers from the elements when the doors were opened.
