Lee Roy was born July 14,1918 in Panhandle, TX. He graduated from Panhandle High School in 1939. He enlisted in the army in Fort Bliss and served from 1941-1945. He served in the China-Burma-India Theater during the battles and campaigns of WWII. He was awarded 3 Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct Medal, and a World War II Victory Medal. He was also awarded the American Defense Service Medal, American Theater Campaign Medal, and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal. He was also a long-time member of VFW Post 6972 in Panhandle, TX. He was a longtime farmer and rancher. He was a member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church.
Lee Roy married Jeanette (Juno) Gurka on February 28,1943 in Rio Grande City, TX. They raised two children and were married for 58 years. Lee Roy farmed, worked as a mechanic and did paint and body work most of his life. He was known for his ability to create something from nothing.
Lee Roy is preceded in death by his wife Juno, his parents, Orlando and Gertrude Meaker, two sisters, Rachel and Elsie, one brother Vincent, and a son, Kenneth and daughter-in-law Susan.
Survivors include his son James and wife Linda Meaker, grandchildren Michelle Renecker and husband Ronnie Doty, Jared Meaker, Robin Meaker, Christy Meaker and fiance Charles Winterburn, Shannon Yant and husband Josh, and Kandus Jeffers and husband Jason, and 12 great-grandchildren with one on the way.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Panhandle or to a charity or foundation of your choice.
