Federal Prohibition Agent James Bowdoin, United States Department of the Treasury - Internal Revenue Service - Prohibition Unit, was shot and killed while conducting a moonshining investigation in Caryville, Florida.He and other agents were searching for stills along the Choctawhatchee River when they discovered a 10 gallon still on a barge. As they were examining the still another boat approached and the occupants opened fire, killing Agent Bowdoin.The other agents returned fire. One of the three men on the boat was killed and the other two wounded. One of the wounded men was later charged with Agent Bowdoin's murder.

Bowdoin, killed in a pistol battle with moonshiners at Careyville Monday, was buried here today. Mr. Bowdoin was a member of the Bradenton klan, which sent a large floral wreath in the form of an emblem of the cross in which were the letters "K.K.K." in red flowers. Fifty Tallahassee women, members of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, attended the funeral and also sent a floral wreath. The pallbearers were composed of members of the faculty of the Florida State College for Women, Sheriff Stoutamire, of Leon County, police officers and others. Many State officials attended the service and a score or more of Mr. Bowdoin's relatives from points in Alabama were present. The Rev. Mr. Spencer, pastor of Trinity Methodist Church, who officiated, referred to Mr. Bowdoin as "a Martyr to the cause of law enforcement."
