Ernest J. Bancroft--Businessman - Civic Leader. Born in Greenup, IL-a son of George R. & Sarah Michaels Bancroft.
Upon graduating from Greenup High School (1899), Mr. Bancroft operated a photography studio in Greenup. He was especially fond of photographing his soon-to-be wife, Fanny Reeder.
After selling his business he purchased the General Merchandise Store (1911), located on the west side of Greenup square,from Mark Monahan. Together, with his wife, and later, his son, George, they developed the business to include coal, gas, and a small real estate business, which they operated for 36 years until his death.
Mr. Bancroft was active in the civic and political affairs of his community. He served as the Mayor of Greenup for four consecutive terms; financial contributor to the newly founded Ettlebrick Shoe Company(1926),President of the Board of Education for eight years, maintaining a strong interest in the school system during his life time. He was a member of the Masons. Also, he was an intense worker for the Republican Party, serving as Deputy Fire Marshall and Precinct Committeeman for many years. During his terms, he worked tirelessly on many civic improvements to benefit the community.
