Edward Lewis Yager was born in Livingston county, Missouri, Jan. 12, 1861. His parents were Dr. Edward T. Yager and Mary McDonald. In 1865 the family moved to Virginia City, Montana. He attended Kemper Military School, Boonville, Missouri 1876-1878. He attended Princeton University in 1880 & 1881. He read law in the office of his uncle in Kansas City for 18 months. In May of 1883, he went to Benson County, North Dakota and took up land in Antelope valley. He was appointed one of the commissioners to organize the county and for many years he had been the only surviving member of that commission, having been sometimes known as the "father of Benson county." Upon admission of the state into the Union, he was elected to the legislature, serving as a member of the state senate. In 1898, he was elected treasurer of Benson county. From 1902 until 1905, he was president of the First National bank at Maddock. In 1892 he married Harriet Cynthia Niles. Edward and Harriet had six children: Dorothy, Imogene, Sherman, Marjorie, Clifford, and Mary Audrey Yager.
