Allen served his country in the U.S. Army for more than 27 years, retiring at the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserves in 1977. He served as a commanding officer, personnel officer and liaison officer for the West Point cadets. He began his military career in 1950 by attending officer candidate school at Fort Riley, Kan. Allen went on to serve in the Korean Conflict and the 1961 Berlin Crisis.
During his professional career as an industrial engineer, he held posts at Western Maryland Railroad, Mack Trucks and Fairchild Republic in Hagerstown, and at Westinghouse in Baltimore. His post-retirement career fed his passions, selling Hondas for Antrim Way Honda, Greencastle, Pa., and guiding national and international travel tours for Richards World Travel and the local chapter of the National Retired Teachers Association, both of Hagerstown.
He was an active member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, serving several terms on the church council. He was a member of Hagerstown Lodge 378 BPO Elks, Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 and a former member of Eureka Lodge 105, Sharpsburg.
He is survived by his wife and life partner of 55 years, Mabel Chapman Poffenberger; his son and daughter-in-law, Ned and Clara Poffenberger, Fairfax, Va.; daughter, Lisa Wolfe, Wilmington, Del.; and grandchildren, Katie and Jordan Poffenberger; nieces; nephews; and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Poffenberger Hoffman; and an infant brother, James Floyd Poffenberger.
A memorial service was held at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hagerstown; private burial was in Mountain View Cemetery; arrangements were handled by Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, Hagerstown.
