Margaret McArtney was born in Barry, Angus, Scotland. She arrived on the Ship "New Zealand" at Nelson, NZ on 4th November 1842. They lived on Bridge St, Nelson, NZ.
Her middle name "Meffin" was after a Presbyterian Minister of the day.

She was in Hobart, Tasmania, caring for the three young Clark boys when the news came of the shipwreck of Capt Hugh Clark and his wife Jean. Maggie took the orphaned lads on 02 DEC 1857 to her parents home in Nelson, New Zealand, and raised them there. She never married, but had been engaged to a farmer who died in a farm accident, when a heavy bale of wool fell on him.

Her last years were spent in the home of her sister Barbara Loasby and her daughter Elizabeth Margaret Wanden.
