The McArtneys, Hendersons and Macfarlanes were Covenanting Presbyterians. Many immigrated to escape continued Anglican persecution.
The McArtney Family sailed as assisted immigrants from Cumray on the Clyde on 4 July 1842 on the Ship 'New Zealand', and arrived at Nelson, NZ on 4th November 1842. They lived on Bridge St, Nelson, NZ. John McArtney set up in Nelson as a Tinsmith and the family worked in the Plumbing business from 1842 to 1953.
The subscription list of 14 AUG 1848 for the erection of the First Presbyterian Church in Nelson includes John A. McArtney as a founding patron. John and Ann McArtney are also noted in "A History of the N.Z. Presbyterian Church", p. 213
