"WILLIAM AND LEONORA HULL
by Jean Hepler, Leonora and Gerald Hull
William Hull was born August 5, 1878 at Boon, Iowa, Leonara
Butka was born October 15, 1881 at Fairbury, Nebraska. They
were married at Butte, Nebraska April 25, 1900. They arrived
in Montana for the first time in the winter of 1907. They, with
their three children, Gerald age 5, Joyce age 3, and Florence a
baby, came to Mondak by train. Frank Hull, Bill's brother,
met them in a sled and took them to his home. He lived in a
house where the Gartside Lake is now located.
At this time scarlet fever was rampaging through the valley
and anyone that even looked suspicious was quarantined by
the health officer, Dr. Morrill. Unfortunately, Gerald had
become ill with the disease while on the train so both families
were quarantined right after they arrived at Frank's home. In
a few days supplies were running low, so Bill went to town for
groceries. About the first person he met in town was Dr.
Morrill, who immediately threatened to have him arrested for
breaking quarantine. Bill explained they needed groceries
and told him that neither he nor anyone else was going
to lock him up. Dr. Morrill finally let him go, but Bill was
never sure which of them won the battle, for several weeks
later, in sub-zero weather, Dr. Morrill fumigated the house by
having barrels of water poured all over the house and its
contents, bedding included. Water stood a foot deep all over
when they finished. It was a terrible joy drying things out;
however, both families were made of hardy material and no ill
effects came of this fumigating effort.
Bill and Nora rented Mr. Bickford's place, located south and
west of the Piche dump. Mr. Bickford left his two daughters,
Marion and Eva, with them while he and his son went to
Arizona to buy a new home. During the time they lived in the
valley, money was usually very scarce. To help ease the
financial situation, Bill farmed, hauled freight and cut posts
for Mr. Vaux. He also sheared sheep, worked on the irrigation
ditch, and even hired out as a catcher for the Fairview ball
team. Nora also worked hard during these years. She planted
and hoed the garden, raised chickens and pigs, kept the house,
cooked and preserved the food, and helped Bill do much of the
main farm work. The children found life very interesting while
living on the Bickford place. Twice a week the Mary Bell, a
paddle boat, came up the river and they had a good view of it
from their front yard. Two stagecoaches passed each other in
front of their house each day, one going to Mondak, the other to
Glendive, Montana.
Nora's sister, Myrtle, and her husband, Alffie Brunner, lived
at Mondak. Alffie ran the ferryboat. Occasionally the families
would visit one another. Alffie did not own a car but he had the
use of Mr. Sonechal's car and the highlight of one of their visits
was the time Alffie took them all to Fort Buford in this car.
There they saw soldiers, and Gerald never forgot it for it
was his first ride in a car, and his first time to see the cavalry.
Another and better reason he had for remembering the trip in a
buggy, and Gerald, feeling very big, decided to walk behind
the buggy instead of riding. Bill always had a great sense of
humor, so he whipped the horses into a run and left Gerald
quite some way behind. Instead of staying on the road Gerald
ran into a field of wheat and hid. About two hours were spent
hunting for him, and the whipping he received when he was
found made a much greater impression on him than either th
fort or the car ride.
New Year's Day of 1908 is one Nora never forgot. It was a
beautiful day and not enough snow to use the sled, so she and
Bill and the children went in the wagon to the Joe Crasford
home to have New Year's dinner with them. The Crawfords
lived in the Three buttes community. While they were eating
dinner a terrible snowstorm and blizzard came up and the
temperature dropped way below zero. Several families had
gathered at the Crawford home for the holiday dinner and the
storm came up so quickly and was so fierce they had to stay at

the Crawford home for three days. Instead of worrying about
the weather they all pitched in to help with the work, the
women cooked and did the dishes, the men did chores. The rest
of the time was spendt visiting, playing cards, dancing and
playing games. ....." [Image page 10 of 19 - untyped through page 15 of 19]

Morrill, who immediately threatened to have him arrested for

and told him that neither he nor anyone else was going

never sure which of them won the battle, for several weeks

Bill and Nora rented Mr. Bickford's place, located south and
west of the Piche dump. Mr. Bickford left his two daughters,

Arizona to buy a new home. During the time they lived in the

cooked and preserved the food, and helped Bill do much of the
main farm work.
