“Mrs. N. M. Scott. Mrs. Elvira Sartwell (Bean), wife of Nathan Merritt Scott, died in Barton Wednesday. Oct. 11th, aged 74 years, 6 months and 23 days. She was the daughter of the late Amos Phelps and Phila (Sartwell) Bean, She married Mr. Scott on Oct. 28th, 1857, who then resided in Glover. In later years Barton has been their home. Seven children have blessed their union, three of whom passed away in infancy. She leaves to mourn her loss a devoted husband, three sons, Frank A., Amos W.. and Harry M. Scott all of St. Johnsbury, one daughter, Mertie Elvira, wife of Fred C. Browning, Barton, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild, besides an aged mother, Mrs. Phila E. Bean, seven brothers and sisters, Mrs. Eliza M. Dwinell and Mrs. Harriet S. Leonard of Glover, Mrs. Emily G. Whitney and Andrew J. Bean of Concord Junction, Mass, Martin V. Bean of Lanesboro, Minn., and Cromwell P. and Amos P. Bean of Glover. Scarcely four years have passed since Mr. and Mrs. Scott celebrated their golden wedding anniversary by giving a dinner to nearest relatives and a felicitous public reception to all friends and citizens. On Friday Oct. 13th, many of these same friends assembled in their home to bid a last farewell to the remains of this beloved wife, mother and sister. Many beautiful flowers covered the casket, the last tribute of love from her many friends. Revs. W. A. Warner and W. B. Dukeshire rendered a brief service of prayer and comforting thoughts of consolation just before the body was borne from her home that has been her kingdom and refuge during these many years and specially since ill health has been her portion. Interment was in Glover cemetery." (Orleans County monitor, October 18, 1911)
