The Tiedjens family left Hamburg 15 May 1852 sailing on the ship Enterprise under Captain Tindle. The father's occupation was listed as an Arbeiter which means laborer in English. They arrived in Quebec and from there made their way to the New Holstein area in Calumet County, Wisconsin.
Sometime after the 1860 census Fred moved westward to Minnesota, settling in Otter Tail County. There he met and was united in marriage in 1873 in Perham, Otter Tail County, Minnesota with Mary Grunert; daughter of Heinrich "Henry" Grunert and Charlotte E. Weisenberger.
Fred and Mary were the parents of 5 children, all who were born in Otter Tail County, Minnesota:
1. Josephine born 1874 married William Kukowske
2. Henrietta "Etta" Louise born 1876 married Uriah Runions
3. Emil born 1880 married Anna E Hilmer
4. Emma Agnes born 1885 married Theodore "Ted" August Rudolf Ouart
5. William Claus born 1888 married Alexzina Marie Duperron
On 15 Aug 1884 Fred was granted a Homestead Certificate #1210 in Otter Tail County, Minnesota for 159.25 acres in Township 137-N, Range 39-W, Section 26, Meridian 5th PM.
In the early 1900s Fred, along with other relatives and neighbors in the Perham area, made the trek into Canada looking to homestead on the Canadian plains. On 22 Aug 1906 Fred filed an application for Homestead Grant #246110 in part NE Section 2, Township 20, Range 5, Meridian W3 in the Central Butte area of Saskatchewan, Canada. The Homestead Grant was patented 18 Feb 1911.
Mary passed away 28 Dec 1912 in Central Butte, Saskatchewan, Canada at he age of 59 years. She was laid to rest in Green Prairie Cemetery in Central Butte, Moose Jaw Census Division, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Fred passed away 29 Dec 1926 in Central Butte at the age of 77 years. He was laid to rest in Green Prairie Cemetery with Mary.
