Lucy Artimus Mapes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ashbele Mapes, was born March 16, 1862 at Kewona, Ill., and departed this life at her home in Agenda, Kansas, June 17, 1924, at the age of 62 years, 3 months and 1 day.
She moved with her parents to Republic county, Kansas, in 1868. She was married to N. R. Wharton on August 28, 1881, and to this union two children were born, Alberta Ann, who died in infancy and George N. Wharton, of Agenda.
In her immediate family, she is survived by her husband, N. R. Wharton, the son George and one granddaughter, Bertha Wharton, one niece, one nephew and many friends.
Mrs. Wharton was one of a family of ten children, Mrs. Mary Clapper, Ainsworth, Nebr., Mrs. Louise Bailey, Centennial, Wyo., Frank Mapes, deceased, Sherman Mapes, deceased, James Mapes, deceased, Robert Mapes, deceased, Mrs. Lilly Hill, deceased, Mrs. Nellie Boyer, deceased and Mrs. Lana Hill, of Ainsworth, Nebr.
About 35 years ago the deceased made confession with the Christian church at Mill Creek in this county. In this confession she remained steadfast to the end of her life.
