James L. Mapes, was the fourth child of Ashbel Mapes and Martha Almeda Vining Mapes. He was born on Mar. 20, 1863, in Henry County, Illinois.

In early 1868, when James was about five years old, his family moved to Republic County, Kansas. The Mapes family was among the first settlers of Elk Creek township, in the southeast corner of Republic County. James grew up on the Mapes farm near Agenda.

In 1895, James was farming with his father. He married Emma Bevorr in September, 1898. Emma died on January 23, 1900, after giving birth to their son Alfred.

On January 4, 1907, James married Lillie Parsons. According to an obituary that appeared in the Cuba Daylight (page 5) on May 22, 1908, James died on May 14, 1908.
