Riley Nathan Wharton was born on a farm near South Bend, Ind., August 30, 1859, and passed away at Concordia November 17, 1936, at the age of 77 years, 2 months, and 18 days. At the age of 14, he came west with his parents, and settled on a farm in Cloud county, where he made his home all of his life, except for a short time spent in Nebraska.

When 21 years old, he married Lucy Mapes and to this union were born two children, Alberta who died in infancy, and George Wharton. His wife died in June, 1921.

He married Mrs. Margaret Roe on December 7, 1929.

He leaves to mourn his wife, his son George, with wife and family, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and an adopted sister; also many other relatives and friends.

Mr. Wharton was kind and considerate and will be sadly missed by his family, and by all who had dealings with him. In spite of his age, he was unusually active to the very last, hard-working and honest. He will be remembered by all who knew him.

He united with the United Brethren church early in life and in later years worshipped with the Baptist church.

The funeral services were held from the home Friday, November 20, and at the Community church, Agenda, with the Rev. A. Schuleen officiating. Interment was made at the Willoughby cemetery.
