He was born July 31, 1913, in Aaron, Mo., to John Franklin and Lula Elvira Stayton Hedges. He was a lifelong Bates County resident. A farmer, he raised pure bred Hereford cattle. Hedge Hollow Ranch is now a hunting preserve in honor of his commitment to the outdoor life.
He was baptized in a nondenominational church in Aaron at a young age, and in later years attended the Cove Creek Christian Church, Altona Baptist Church and Pleasant Gap Christian Church.
On April 19, 1933, he was united in marriage to Wilma Musetta Finklang at Butler. She preceded him in death in 2001.
Survivors include three sons, Loyed A. Hedges of Des Moines, Iowa, Darell Hedges of Independence, Mo., and William "Bill" Hedges of Blue Springs, Mo.; three daughters, Evelyn Peak of Girard, Marcile Addington of Odessa, Mo., and Arneta Marshall of Granby, Mo.; two brothers, Don Hedges of Butler and Buford Hedges of Fremont, Neb.; one sister, Alice Harr of Green Valley, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter Elizabeth Hedges; a grandson, Terry Smith; three brothers, Claude Hedges, Leroy Hedges and Paul Hedges; and one sister, Goldie Hall.
Funeral services will be today at the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel, Butler, with Giffin Simmons officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler.
