RV was born February 11, 1930 to the late John R. Thurlkill and Sarah E. Moore Thurlkill . He retired from the U. S. Marines after 20 years of service as a E7 Gunnery Sargent. He served in Korea, Guam, China, Japan and Vietnam with a full honorable discharge. After retiring from the Marines, he went to work for Willamette were he was a millwright and saw filer. He was an avid outdoorsman,loved to hunt, fish and camp. He loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are his parents; wife, Naomi Mae Hurst Thurlkill; two sisters, Etta Hux and Ernestine Bates.
Survivors include his five children, Ann McAdams (Scott), Virgil Lynn Thurlkill (Vicki), Karen McVay Thurlkill, Keith Thurlkill, Richard Thurlkill (Monica); four sisters, Joyce Ham, Florence Williamson, Willie Jean Locket and Carolyn Barber (Don); eleven grandchildren, Jason Cates (Brandi), Jeremy Cates, Kim Trammell (J.P.), Anthony Thurlkill (Mindy), Bobby McVay (Melanie, Chelsea Thurlkill, Chris Thurlkill (Rhonda), Hailey Lewis (Ben), Matt McAdams (Kacie), Bobby Carrillo, Ray Carrillo (Heather); twenty great grandchildren, Ragan Cates, Jadan Cates, Hudson Cates, Hadlie Cates, Henlie Cates, Harley Trammell, Jackie Trammell, Felix Trammell, Allison Thurlkill, Sawyer Thurlkill, Ryne Thurlkill, Jessica Thurlkill, Jace Lewis, Kate Lewis, Kendra Johnson, Blake Carrillo, Katie Carrillo, Steven Carrillo, Jenna McAdams, Cameron McAdams, Drake McAdams and Tyler Carrillo; three great great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 - 8pm Tuesday, October 4 at Mt. Union Baptist Church.
Services will be held at 10am Wednesday, October 5 at Mt. Union Baptist Church with Bro. John Ayers and Bro. Paul Sheets officiating. Interment to follow at Smyrna Cemetery under direction of Perry's Funeral Chapels.
