Merle, a daughter, the oldest & first born child of six children, all born to Philo & Agnes Chase. Philo's sister-in-law, Ida (Morris) Chase, talked about Philo & his family. Nothing very extensive or detailed about them just generalities. We do know from Ida that they were as hard working & set in their ways as their Uncle Fenton, Philo's brother. At the time when we married in 1970 we had no idea that Merle, some of her siblings, & their children were still living. So we never had the pleasure or opportunity to meet them. We never met any of their children so we could at least become familuar with our cousins. I have surmized that there were one or two reason this distance came between our branch of the family. One is the distance from where each family lived. You have to admit the commute between Washington & N.Dakota is a doozy. The second one I assume is because of what transpired after Fenton's return from fighting & getting injured in World War I. We now know that Fenton most likely suffered from PTSD. He turned to alcohol because of his pain, the dreams & flash backs he must have experienced. Eventualy Ida & Fenton divorced, but neither one ever remarried. I did have the pleasure of finding one of Philo's daughters Louise. We talked on the phone & exchanged a few letters before Louise died in 2010. We may never know much about them but they have touched our lives. Their names & families are mow attached to our lineage & will be passed on to our next generations. Only one of Merle's siblings we have not been able to find, Everett John Chase (1914-1999).
