James' parents were Michael and Mary (Bodkin) Hoover. He married Elizabeth A. Johnson on 13 Mar 1851 in Bad Axe, Crawford Co., Wisconsin. Together they has 5 children: Sarah M., Michael William, Esau, Margaret Catherine and Alice. After a divorce he married Sarah Jane (Murphy) Woodruff on 27 June 1867 in Mercer County, Illinois. Together they had 4 children: Mary Ellen, Ansel, Jasper and James. James' stone states he was born 1823 but by census records and obituary he wasn't born until 1828.
