Pvt. Wm. Gates Killed in Action In France Area

Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Gates, 11? Seventh street south, have been notified that their son Pvt. William Harold Gates, was killed in action in France on August 20.


Born February 23, 1920 at Langola Farm near Rice, Pvt. Gates enlisted in the army medical corps at Fort Snelling in May, 1940 and was later transferred to the mechanized army unit, stationed at Fort Riley, Kan. There he was promoted to corporal, sergeant and then staff sergeant.


He joined the paratroopers and trained at Fort Benning, Ga., and Fort Moede, prior to going overseas. Stationed first in North Africa, he was later sent to Sicily, Italy, and took part in the invasion of Southern France.


Pvt. Gates is survived by his parents and the following brothers and sisters: Alfred, Bismarck, N.D., Francis Rice; Mrs. B.A. Russell Seattle Wash.; and Mrs. Dorothy Fedderman[Feddema] St. Cloud. A memorial service will be conducted Friday at the Graham Evangelical church northeast of Rice at 2 p.m.
