James Edmund "Ed" Layfield, oldest of two sons of Edmund Layfield and Alice Gray Wolfe, b. Jan. 5, 1888 at Radnor, Penn.

Ed and younger brother Oliver both attended Drexel Institute of Technology at Philadelphia (now Drexel University) in mechanical engineering. Initially, both brothers worked for Durham Body Company at Norristown, Penn. with Oliver subsequently leaving Durham Body to open a garage at Radnor, Penn. The garage was a design and fabrication shop specializing in automobile and truck car bodies. Brother Ed left Durham Body for Hale Fire Pump Company at Conshohocken, PA where he designed fire pump components. Later, Ed and Oliver partnered together at the Radnor garage with Oliver the designer and Ed the sheet metal fabricator. The garage was located on their parent's homestead at Radnor just north of the Lancaster Avenue "Main Line" between Villanova University and the town of Wayne. In the mid-1950s the Layfield's Radnor family homestead was acquired by TV Guide for expansion of its adjoining complex. Reportedly, the garage was converted into TV Guide's advertising offices.

On Oct. 30, 1914 at St. Martin's Episcopal Church at Radnor, Penn., Ed m. his 2nd cousin, Lucy Broadbent of Attleboro, Mass., eldest child of Joseph Broadbent, Jr. and Hannah Maria Layfield, b. Sept. 20, 1886 at Oldham, Lancashire, England. Ed's paternal grandfather Edmund Layfield was the older brother of wife Lucy's maternal grandfather Howarth Layfield.

Ed and Lucy made their home at Radnor, Penn. until shortly before 1950 when they relocated to Fort Lauderdale, FL. There Ed was employed as an electrician and electrical repairman. After developing skin cancer, in the early 1960s Ed and Lucy temporarily relocated to Salem, NH where they resided with the family of their son Arthur before purchasing land adjacent to other extended family at Silver Lake east of Keene, NH. Prior to their death, the Silver Lake property was transferred to the Harrington grand children.

James Edmund "Ed" Layfield d. Feb. 26, 1977 at a retirement home located at the Riverside section of East Providence, RI. He was interred in one of three remaining lots purchased in 1965 by his deceased son-in-law at Evergreen Cemetery west of Goldsboro, NC. The widow Lucy (Broadbent) Layfield d. Nov. 30, 1977 at the same retirement center at which her husband had died earlier the same year, and was also interred at Evergreen Cemetery west of Goldsboro, NC. They had two children:

• i. Arthur Edmund "Jake" Layfield, b. Sept. 15, 1915 at Wayne, Penn., d. Dec. 28, 2005 at Claremore, Oklahoma; m. Mar. 3, 1954 at Lower Merion Twp, Montgomery County, Penn., the widow [living] by whom he had one child.

• ii. Marie Broadbent Layfield, b. Sept. 29, 1919 at Radnor, Penn., d. Feb. 26, 1965 at Goldsboro, NC; m. Nov. 22, 1945, William Kenison "Ken" Harrington, s. of Clarence Dunn Harrington and Mabel Kenison, b. Nov. 11, 1917 at Providence, RI. He d. Aug 5, 1969 at Moosup (Plainfield), Conn. Five children of the family.
