Mrs. Nelson was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late John Henry and Bessie Mae Perry Crowe. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Nelson, in 2000, and a sister, Patsy Ann Curtis.
Mrs. Nelson was a 1959 graduate of Elizabethton High School. She was a retired cook at Hillview Nursing Home and a member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Michael Higgins, of the home; a daughter, Melissa Russell, Elizabethton; two brothers, Herbert Crowe and Joe Crowe, both of Elizabethton; a sister, Beatrice Campbell, Watauga; a half sister, Pearl Cole, Elizabethton; and a granddaughter, Tayler Nicole Nidiffer, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Higgins Nelson, 61, 119 Fitzsimmons Hill Road, Lot #8, Elizabethton, who died Friday, September 6, 2002, will be conducted at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, September 8, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with the Rev. Bobby Stout officiating. Music will be by the Pleasant Beach Quartet and Cindy Odom, pianist. Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, September 9, in the Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Mark Austin, David Austin, Randy Jackson, Buddy Odom, Kevin Waldrop and Grady Campbell. Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Higgins, Jerry Russell, Hoover Crowe and Vaughn Campbell. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service. Friends may also call at the residence of a brother, Herbert Crowe, 1302 Bristol Highway, Elizabethton, at any time. Everyone will meet at the cemetery at 9:50 a.m. Monday for the graveside service. Linda married Kenneth Maynard Higgins on April 9, 1960 in Carter Co. They divorced on July 16, 1997 in Carter Co. Linda then married Curtis H Nelson on Oct. 2, 1998 in Carter Co. Curtis died in 2000.
