Well Known Contractor Passes Away at Hospital in Fifty-Second Year

John Banks, well known building contractor of North Wilkes-Barre, died at Mercy Hospital at 7:25 o'clock last evening of complications, aged 52. He had been living in Brooklyn, N. Y., during the last two years. He had not been enjoying very good health for some time, consequently he came here a few weeks ago. His brother Joseph sent him to his farm at Towanda but Saturday night he became nervously ill with the result that he was hurried to this city and upon advice of his physician, later to Mercy Hospital.
Mr. Banks was born in Mahanoy City, coming to this city with his parents thirty-two years ago. He built two of our public schools and also the Slovak Church on North Main street.
He is survived by his wife and three children: Charles, a musician, who plays the organ in one of the most prominent churches in Brooklyn; Frank, a lieutenant in the 29th Heavy Artillery, now in France, and a daughter, Florence. The former was here at the bedside while his father was breathing his last.
Mr. Banks was a splendid type of American citizen. He was a man who was honest and upright in all his dealings with his fellow men. He always voiced his honest convictions of men and things and went to his reward regretted by all who knew him. He was a loving husband and affectionate father and a good kind brother.
Besides his wife and children he is survived by the following brothers: Bernard Banks, well known health officer; Joseph, of the Banks Construction Company and Dr. H. W. of Philadelphia; also three sisters, Mrs. Frederick Goeringer, Mrs. Benjamin Stanley, of Philadelphia; and Mrs. Robert Chambers, of Kingston.
The body will be taken to the home of his brother, Joseph, 60 Kulp street, this morning.
The funeral will occur Friday afternoon with services in St. Luke's Reformed Church, North Franklin street and interment in Hollenback Cemetery.
