Erna was the 3rd of 6 children of John and Mollie Bartels. She was brought up in the Lutheran faith, having been baptized as an infant at Zion Lutheran Church and confirmed there in 1923. She attended college for one year. Zion was also the site of her marriage, in 1936, to Henry Schoenbeck. She joined him in Lincoln, Nebraska at his home at 1136 D Street and worked as a secretary in the advertising department of the newspaper until their daughter Gretchen was born in 1938. After her husband obtained his PhD from the University of Nebraska, they moved to Bellville, New Jersey. After Henry's death, she joined her daughter in Durham County, North Carolina, and died there in a nursing home at Highlands at the age of 92.
