Bernard J. Bartels, 94, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2015, at the Grand Island Veterans Home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Christ Lutheran Church. The Rev. Thomas Clark will officiate. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, with military honors by the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul.
Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bartels was born July 24, 1921, in Tobias to John and Amalia (Endorf) Bartels. He grew up on the farm and attended Zion Parochial School and then Tobias High School, graduating in 1939.

Bernard served in the United States Army from 1942 until 1945. While in the Army, he served in New Guinea, Okinawa, Philippines and Korea. He was united in marriage to Viola Bender on April 20, 1947, in Scotland, S.D. This union was blessed with five sons, Stephen, James, Dwight, Timothy and Brian.

Bernard’s employment took him to Danbury, Iowa, Bradshaw, Neb., and Wagner, S.D. After his retirement, the couple lived in Albion and St. Paul. On March 29, 2011, they entered the Grand Island Veterans Home.

He was a member of the VFW in Bradshaw and a lifetime member of the American Legion in Hampton.

Survivors include his wife, Viola, of Grand Island; five sons and three daughters-in-law, Stephen and Terry Bartels of Greeley, Colo., James and Sharleen Bartels of St. Paul, Dwight Bartels of Manhattan, Kan., Timothy Bartels of Holyoke, Colo., and Brian and Stacy Bartels of Jewell, Iowa; and eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Walter and Genevieve Bartels and Donald Bartels; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and Otto Nolte, Erna and Henry Schrenbeck, Lucile and Walter Nun; an infant brother and an infant great-granddaughter.

Bernard was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in St. Paul.
