Henry grew up in Saline County, Nebraska; he was the oldest of 7 children. He was baptized as an infant at Zion Lutheran Church near him, and confirmed there in 1921. He attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, graduating in 1931. In 1936 he married Erna Bartels of Saline County and she joined him in Lincoln, Nebraska where he was the principal of Evangelical Emanuel Lutheran School. They lived there for several years, and had one daughter, Gretchen, in 1938. Henry obtained his PhD from NU, and they moved to Bellville, New Jersey where his daughter graduated from high school in 1956. Gretched married William E. Wilson, Jr. and died in 2009 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
