Son of James Aldridge and Nancy J., listed as age 12 on the 1850 Washington County, Missouri, census with his parents and six siblings. This family was listed in Reeder Township of Anderson County, Kansas, in 1865. William's father, (James b. ca. 1807 in North Carolina) remarried after the death of William's mother. He was listed in Thurston County, Washington Territory, in 1880.

Aldridge enlisted in Troop H, 9th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry, on 2 Nov 1861 (or 16 Jan 1862) and mustered out 16 Jan 1865 at DeVall's Bluff, Arkansas. The date of 16 Jan 1862 is also listed as an enlistment date in a 1902 GAR record from the Neosho Post #129 at Chanute, Kansas. Two of William's brothers also served for three years in the 9th Kansas Cavalry.

Aldridge first married Sophia Marshall 12 Dec 1878. (Anderson County, Kansas marriage index) He is listed with wife Marie J. on the 1910 census in the town of Chanute, Kansas. He married Mrs. Maria J. Gardner 18 May 1904. (Jackson County, Missouri marriage license) The 1910 census lists his marriage to Marie as his second marriage. Marie's marriage to William is listed as her third marriage. She is listed as the mother of two.
