Portsmouth daily Times Sat June 12, 1926 - Mrs. William F. Whitney - Elizabeth Margaret Jones was born at Thurman, Gallia Co., OH on May 15, 1845, the daughter of David and Margaret Jones, who came from Wales. David Jones was an Episcopalian and Elizabeth Margaret was christened when an infant by an Episcopalian clergyman, who was holding services for the few church people in the neighborhood. While she was still a child the father and two sons moved to Iowa, leaving her to be cared for by friends until he was settled. Later he came and took her with him to his new home, where she remained until his death. She was then brought back to Cincinnati to live with an older married sister and to attend school. At the age of 18 she united with Ninth Street Baptist church, Cincinnati. In 1869 she came to Portsmouth to make her home with her brother, the late Thomas L Jones and on May 15, 1871 was married to Wm F Whitney. There were three children: Bertie who died in infancy; Tom Jones who died when seven years old and Glenny. Mr. Whitney passed away in April 1914, since which time Mrs. Whitney has been alone. She has much charitable, patriotic and church work to her credit. Was a charter member of Beiley Relief Corps No 43, auxiliary to the GAR. Several times she was president of the Corps, besides filling minor offices and was always a faithful and efficient member. For several years, only becaues of physical disability, she has been kept pretty close to home. While not able to take part in active work outside the homem up to about one month ago she attended to the lighter household work, and because of the kindness of many loyal friends, also kept in touch with affairs in general. Was recovering from a severe illness and doing nicely untl Sun evening, May 16, when she had a fall which resulted in injuries from which it seemed she could not recover. Mrs. Whitney was given every attention by the staff and nurses of Portsmouth General Hospital, her physician, and devoted friends, but despite their efforts she passed away at eleven o'clock Sat everning, June 12, 1926. Living relatives are one son, Glenny; Mrs. Pearl Jones Griffith of Jackson and Miss Lillie Griffith of San Francisco; three nephews: Will Lloyd of Asheville, NC; Ben Lloyd of Florida; and Jos E Lloyd of New Albany, IN. Miss Isabel C. Whitney of Circlevillem is a sister-in-law.
