After an illness of only a few days Mr. D.S. Westra died Friday at his home near the First Reformed church. He had not been feeling well for several years but was able to be around. Thursday matters took a turn for the worse and lung fever developed to which he succumbed Friday.
Mr. Westra has lived in this city since 1881 and has won esteem as an excellent citizen and a gardener whose services were much sought after. He was the designer of the grounds and gardens of the H. Hospers property.
Mr. Westra was born in the Netherlands in I833. In 1859 he was married to Beitske Houtstra who died a few years after they came to this country.
The surviving children of this marriage are: Mrs.. G. Van Sleenwyk, Mrs. Wiekamp of Sioux Center, Mrs. D. Brinkman of Sheldon, Sikke Westra of Ireton, Mrs. K. Terpstra of Pipestone, Minn;, Mrs. D. Bonnema of Lebanon, Mrs. J. C. Pryde of Boyden, Gerrit of Boyden, and Mrs. H. Zeutenborst of Sioux Center.
In 1884 Mr. Westra was married to Mrs. Ienke De Jong. The funeral was held Monday at the First Reformed church.
