Wichita, Kan. - Sister Scholastica Moeder, ASC, died April 21 at the Adorers of the Blood of Christ Wichita Center, age 94. She was a professed Adorer of the Blood of Christ for 75 years.

She was born Oct. 1, 1914, near Liebenthal, Kan., to Pius and Mary (Steiner) Moeder. She was baptized Mathilda two days later in St. Joseph Church.

She completed her elementary education at the parish school, under the direction of ASC sisters. Having been raised in Odin, Kan., one of the first ASC Kansas missions, and with five aunts who were members of the ASC congregation, she considered her call to religious life into the same congregation a nurtured consequence.

Sister Scholastica began high school at St. John's Academy, Wichita, as a postulant and completed the remaining courses after novitiate, graduating in l936. Several months later she entered St. Francis School of Nursing, Wichita, later transferring to Enid, Okla., to finish. She pronounced her final vows in 1938. She began her ministry as an anesthetist and surgical room supervisor at hospitals in Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Illinois. She earned her CRNA certification at St. Francis Hospital, Peoria, in 1952.

Over time, Sister Scholastica served in ASC-sponsored or managed hospitals for more than 57 years, including at different times 25 years in Enid and seven years at St. Luke's in Marion, Kan. The longest she ministered in one place consecutively was over 25 years at St. Vincent Memorial Hospital in Taylorville, at the time sponsored by the ASCs. She was a nurse anesthetist there for 11 years. At age 75, she began working part-time for Home Health Care services in Taylorville.

In 2000, the local Sertoma Club honored her with its Service to Mankind Award. When she left Taylorville in 2003, she was feted with a farewell reception that included a mayoral proclamation and extensive coverage in the Taylorville press. She was a member of the Senior Center Board, Taylorville, a prison minister, and a volunteer at various community medical events. Sister Scholastica retired to the Wichita Center in 2003.

Preceding her in death are her parents; her sister Monica; her brothers, Leo, Albert, Bill and Thomas. She is survived by her brother Rudy; her cousins Father August Moeder and Father John Moeder; and her nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 25 in the Chapel of Our Lady of the New Covenant at the Wichita Center, with Bishop Eugene J. Gerber as presider and homilist. Burial in the community cemetery followed.

Memorial contributions in Sister Scholastica's honor may be sent to the ASC Retirement Fund, ASC Wichita Center, 1165 Southwest Blvd., Wichita, KS 67213.
