Civil War: Enlisted on March 3, 1865 as a Private and mustered into Company I, 15th (Reorganized) Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was discharged for disability on June 10, 1865. George's residence was Willow Creek Township when he mustered along with an older brother, Adin, and their future brother-in-law, David Anderson. His original discharge document is still held by a family member.

George married Susannah Banning in Reynolds Township, Ogle County on January 29, 1874. They and three children moved in 1882 to Warner, Brown County, Dakota Territory (later South Dakota).
