Ellen was born in Dekalb Co., Illinois, but by the 1860 Census her family had moved to Winnebago Co. with their children. Sometime before 1870, they finally settled in Oregon Township, Ogle Co., Illinois. Ellen, aged 20, married Chester Hutchins Eastman, aged 41, 26 Dec. 1865 in Oregon. He became a tailor and they had 3 children. In 1876, Chester, suffering from chronic rheumatism, left his tailoring business in Oregon and travelled to the Black Hills gold fields. Ellen waited to give birth to their youngest child, Verner, then followed him with her children about 1878. She died of cholera in Deadwood, Lawrence Co., South Dakota 16 Mar. 1880. Her headstone in Mount Moriah Cemetery reads "Mrs. C. H. Eastman" and is located in South Potter's Field, near the grave of Wild Bill Hickock.
