Gettysburg Reunion

Sapulpa Herald, July 30, 1938

"Eternal peace between the north and south. That's what our Gettysburg reunion meant to the old Civil War veterens." Just back from his all-expense paid trip to Pennsylvania, Joseph Morgan, 93 year old Union veteran, is mighty proud of the government he helped preserve. He likes to talk about it.

But this self-styled "dyed in the wool Republican" still gets a thrill in recalling the appeareance of President Roosevelt at the dedication of the"eternal peace" monument.

And he hastens to add, "I was sittin about 20 feet from the president. He looked at me with those clear blue eyes and smiled broadly. He knew who I was. He saw my big badge."

Yes sir, Republican Morgan is ready to announce he'll support Democrat Roosevelt for a third term if the president gets into the race.

"Standing there on the platform of Abraham Lincoln, President Roosevelt promised eternal peace and good will," Morgan recalled. "Then the flag dropped and the big monument was unveiled. There's an eternal flame about the size of a wash tub which leaps out of the top."

Morgan was among the 1,500 Yankees and the 500 southern veterans. The tent city spread for blocks with all needed living facilities at the disposal of the veteran guests.

"But there wasn't a single veteran I'd ever known." Morgan recalled a little sadly. "They're all gone, I guess." But Morgan is surprisingly spry for his 93 years. He goes to town about twice a week and gets up around the house every day, enjoying occaisional chats with neighbors.

He fought in skirmishes at Wildcap Gap, Cumberland Gap, and Somerset, all in Kentucky. The only tangible traces of his fighting days are two tiny shot marks on his forehead and a bullet scar on his neck. Morgan moved from Kentucky to Crawford county Arkansas in 1876 and lived there 47 years before coming to Muldrow, Oklahoma.
