Joseph was born on the family farm in Mishicot (Township) near the village of Tisch Mills, WI. He was the second of nine children born to Frank W. & Mary (Rezac) Stangel. On 14 May 1918, he married Emma M. Beranch at Saint Mary Catholic Cemetery in Tisch Mills, WI; he was age 34, she was 20.
From his obit published in the Manitowoc Herald Times: "Joe and his brother Edward took over operation of the F. W. Stangel & Sons Store at Tisch Mills upon the death of their father. Joseph Stangel operated the store for approximately 50 years until his retirement 11 years ago. He served as organist for 50 years at Saint Mary Church, was an ardent musician, having played with many of the local area brass bands, and organized the Tisch Mills Brass Band."
A loving husband, a father of two sons & clearly a man of many talents, Joseph died at Madison, WI at age 80.
