Woodrow was the older of two son born to Joseph Ignatz & Emma M. (Beranch) Stangel.
He grew up in the Tisch Mills, WI community, helping his father & uncle run the family business (F.W. Stangel & Sons Grocery) before heading to complete four years of college. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Army in June of 1941.
At the end of WW-II, Woodrow returned home from US Army service to marry Elaine.
