John was one of four children born to Thomas M. and Nancy C. Walker. He was born in Polk County, Illinois in 1870. His family later moved to Dunklin County, Missouri, where he met and married Florence Ellen Hammons on November 10, 1892. They had seven children:
George Thomas Walker, born in 1893
Mary Louisa Walker, born in 1895
Ernest W. (Pete) Walker, born in 1897
Annie Mae Walker, born in 1901
Clarence Odell Walker, born in 1903
Liller Estelle Walker, born in 1905
Florence Ellen Walker, born in 1914
Sometime around 1900 John and Florence moved with their family to Texas, settling in Houston County. After Florence's death in 1921, John married Callie Andrews Anderson Volkes.
