Jose Maria Estudillo was the son of one of the prominent founding families of Old Town San Diego, CA. He was the son of Jose Antonio Ramon Joaquin Ygnacio Vincente Estudillo and his wife Maria Victoria Reyes Dominguez Estudillo. It is believed he was born in the historic Estudillo house in Old Town.
He was the superintendent of the San Diego City Schools 1859-1860 and again in 1863-1867. He married Maria de la Luz Marron on Jul 1 1862 and they had seven children.
