Betty Jane was the middle of three children born to Betty (Helvey) and James Hyland Haley of Sewickley, Pennsylvania.

She completed her formal education through the Sewickley School system, and this is where she met her future husband, Jack Cain. They were married on June 5, 1941, and from this marriage were born three children, Sandra Lee, Jack Robert and Larry Lee Cain.

Her husband, Jack, was stationed in San Diego, California while he was in the Navy during World War II, and after the War they remained there for the remainder of their lives.

Their younger son Larry developed polio at the age of six, and Betty and Jack devoted much of their time caring for him until his death in 1996.

Betty was well thought of by her neighbors and church family. Surviving her are three grandchildren, Mark, Sheri and Lindsey, six great grandchildren and two nieces, Maureen and Holly.
