FRANCES MAE (CROW) KNIGHT
Frances Mae (Crow) Knight, 83, passed away February 25, 2004. Mrs. Knight was born November 12, 1920, in Gilmore City, Iowa, to Clinton Allen and Cora Jane (Davis) Crow.
When she was six years old, her family moved to a log house at the edge of the woods in northern Minnesota. Frances attended 1st grade in a one-room schoolhouse at Spring Lake, MN, before her family moved into the larger, nearby town of Deer River. Throughout her life, she cherished memories of seeing moose, hearing the 'laughing' loons, the howling of wolves, riding in a horse-drawn sleigh, and life in the remote north woods. Her father, battling tuberculosis, moved his family to Colorado in 1927. They lived for a while on the eastern plains near Simla and Ramah, before moving into Colorado Springs. There, Frances finished her elementary education, attended West Junior High and graduated from Colorado Springs High School in 1937, at the age of 16.
While working as a switchboard operator at the Modern Woodmen T. B. Sanatorium, Frances met her future husband, Nathan Clay "Nate" Knight, who was a patient there at the time. They were married August 1, 1942, in Colorado Springs, and enjoyed 60 happy years together. She worked as a secretary at Alexander Film Company in Colorado Springs for 12 years. In 1962, Frances, Nate and their two younger children moved to Canon City where she lived the remainder of her life.
She converted to the Catholic faith in 1957 and, although she had not been able to attend Mass for several years, was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Canon City. During the 1960s and '70s, she belonged to St. Michael's Jester's Club, sewing circles and was active on the 'Prayer Alert' phone chain. Frances was very concerned with shut-ins, and would volunteer to help them whenever she saw a need. Whether providing transportation, running errands, helping with tax returns, or simply sending a 'Thinking Of You' card, she always put the needs and feelings of others ahead of her own. She was truly a devoted and selfless wife, mother and friend.
Frances had a great love of music. She was partial to blues and especially fond of country music. Merle Haggard was her all-time favorite country singer. She played fiddle and guitar, had a beautiful, alto voice and loved to sing harmony. She and Nate instilled this love of music in their three children.
Frances had an abiding interest in history, was an avid genealogy researcher, loved poetry, the outdoors, drives in the mountains and fishing. Some of her most cherished memories were of times spent in the mountain cabin she and Nate owned for a while in the Bighorn Ranch area.
Frances was preceded in death by her husband; parents; stepmother, Ruth I. E. (Lind) Crow; brother, James Myron Crow; and son-in-law, Robert H. Tridle. She will be greatly missed by her surviving family; children: Janice L. Tridle of Lakewood, Wade C. (Dana) Knight of Florissant and Patricia K. (Lonnie) Sedillo of Canon City; grandchildren: G. Denise Turner of Denver; Katrina S. Knight and Kraig C. Knight of Florissant; numerous cousins and many friends.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, March 6, at Holt Family Funeral Home, 806 Macon Avenue, Canon City, CO.
