Margaret Wardlaw, daughter of John Wardlaw Jr. and the former Miss Jane Bowman,was born in 1785 in Abbeville, South Carolina. Her father and grandfather both fought at the revolution Battle of Musgrove's Mill near Cross Anchor, South Carolina; a major turning point in the southern states.

Margaret Wardlaw married James J. Devlin, son of James Devlin, Esq. and the former Miss Margaret Ann Gray.; with whom she had ten children, fours sons and six daughters:

Margaret Wardlaw Devlin departed this life on the 25th of June 1844 at the age of 59 years old. She was buried in the churchyard cemetery at Cedar Springs near her son, John, who preceded her in death.
