During the American Revolution, John served as a Private in Capt. Samuel Moore and Capt. John Irwin's company's under General Andrew Pickens in the South Carolina Militia.
John Wardlaw, Jr. was married to Jane Bowman, daughter of William and Mary [Reid] Bowman of Abbeville, South Carolina. John and Jane had four known children:

John, III (1795-1826)
John Wardlaw, Jr. departed this life on the 1st day of October 1804 and was laid to rest in the churchyard cemetery at Greenville Presbyterian, where his family were longtime members.
John Wardlaw, Jr., is also remembered in Smith Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
