Carl Schwindt, 92 of Gering, Neb. died Sun., March 2, 2003 at Heritage Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be Thurs., March 6, 2003 at 10:00 A.M. at Zion Evangelical Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Doug Jones officiating. Interment will be at Bayard Cemetery in Bayard, Neb.

Memorials have been established to Prairie Haven Hospice and Heritage Health Care Center. Visitation will be Wed. from 9:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Gering Memorial Chapel.

Carl was born on March 6, 1910 at Potopwa, Russia to Henry and Caroline (Reifschneider) Schwindt. Carl and four other children left Potopwa, Russia on the King Kiser Wilhelm Ship when he was three years old and settled in the Gering area. Carl and his wife, Henrietta (Fogel) Schwindt, who preceded him, moved to Bayard where they farmed and later moved to Kimball where Carl owned the Standard Station. Carl was later the Kimball Chamber Executive Director. Carl later married Esther (Dietrich) Ostermiller and moved to Gering to make their home.

Carl joined the Lions Club in 1943 and was a lifetime member, and was also a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church. He served many offices in the Lions Club.

Carl's enjoyment in life was his family. He was a Christian and very solid and steadfast in his beliefs and actions throughout his life. He was proud to be an American citizen.

Carl is survived by his wife, Esther Schwindt of Gering; son Ronald and wife Connie of North Platte, Neb.; daughter Kathleen Stahla and husband Ed of Sitka, Alaska; daughter-in-law Florene Schwindt of Clifton, Colo.; eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren; brother David Schwindt and wife Tug of Alliance, Neb.; a stepson Dennis Ostermiller and wife Katherine of Newington, Conn., step-daughter Paula Bell of Ferndale, Wash., and five step-grandchildren and three step-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Henrietta Fogel Schwindt, son Jimmy Schwindt, daughter-in-law Charolette Nuss Schwindt, granddaughter Nikki Schwindt, brothers Henry Schwindt, and Fred Schwindt, sisters Katy Yekel, Suzanne Constance, Leah Bumpus, Emma Cheattle, Caroline Schwindt, Molly Osgood and Amy Libsack.
Gering Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
