U.S. Congressman, Georgia Governor. He attended the Lexington Academy, graduated from Princeton College in 1792 and moved to Georgia, in 1796. There he studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Greene County Georgia, in 1801. In 1803, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of John Milledge, was reelected to the Eighth and Ninth Congresses, serving until 1807. After leaving Congress, he was appointed the first judge of the Superior Court of the Ocmulgee Georgia Circuit, serving (1807-13). In 1813, he was elected as a Republican the 28th Georgia Governor, serving until 1815. While in office, he was instrumental in committing funds from the state treasury, for supplies, plus additional troops from Georgia, for the U.S. Military Forces during the latter half of the War of 1812. After his term, he was elected to the Georgia State Senate in 1815 and served until his death at age 44.
