Mary Jane Galer's list of persons buried in the Old Cemetery section of Linwood shows: Jeremiah EARLY, born in Green[e] County, Georgia; interred in the "REDD Lot" - comments: Descendant of Joel EARLY of Greene County, Georgia; copied from grave monument. [Galer's source was the sexton's card file (an index created in the 20th century). The notion that Jeremiah EARLY is buried in Linwood Cemetery appears to be mistaken.]

There is no burial record and no grave monument for a Jeremiah EARLY at Linwood Cemetery. Apparently, some eager copyist making cards for the sexton's card file creatively inferred from the inscription on the grave monument of son Alexander J. EARLY (d. 1844) that Jeremiah is also there. Alexander's inscription reads:

"SACRED / here lies the body of / ALEXANDER J. EARLY / who departed this life / May 17th 1844, / in the 28th year of his age, / son of the late / JEREMIAH EARLY, / of Greene County. / One of the few descendants / of the late / JOEL EARLY / of the same county. // He was generous and he was just, / in life friend to the friendless, / in death he did not forget the widow and orphan."

We may observe that this inscription doesn't state that either Jeremiah or predecessor Joel is buried at Linwood Cemetery. There is no other monument detected or reported at Linwood that mentions Jeremiah. Moreover, the information copied onto the card file card corresponds with the mention of Jeremiah on Alexander's inscription, namely that he is Jeremiah EARLY of Greene County, Georgia (no dates or other information; and apparently the comment interpreted to mean that Jeremiah is a "descendant" of Joel EARLY of the same county actually refers to Alexander being a descendant of Joel. It seems Jeremiah is Joel's son and Alexander, Joel's grandson.).

During the November 1821 term of the Court of Ordinary in Greene County, Georgia, the following was recorded: "On motion, ordered that John CUNNINGHAM, who intermarried with Ann L. EARLY, former widow of Jeremiah EARLY, dec'd., be appointed the Guardian of Eliza EARLY and Alexander EARLY, orphans of the said Jeremiah EARLY, dec'd. & be bound in the sum of Twenty five thousand dollars. Chas. A. RED & T. CUNNINGHAM, Securities." So Jeremiah EARLY had died prior to this time, most likely in Greene County, Georgia, and would be buried there (Muscogee County was not established until 1826 and Columbus not laid out until 1827).

The REDD Lot in question at Linwood Cemetery is Lot 65 of Section H in Dolores Autry's "Historic Linwood Cemetery," edited by Lea Dowd et al., Volume 3, pp. 28-29. Among those buried in this lot is Alexander J. EARLY (died 17 MAY 1844, aged 28 years, son of Jeremiah EARLY of Greene County, Georgia. According to Autry/Dowd, Jeremiah EARLY is said to have married 15 OCT 1806 in Greene County, Georgia, to Elizabeth CUNNINGHAM, daughter of James CUNNINGHAM (1767-1812) & Frances REDD (1771-1843). Some online accounts report that that Jeremiah EARLY was born 1777 in Orange County, Virginia and died 04 MAY 1818 in Greene County, Georgia, and perhaps was also married to Ann L. BILLUPS.
