Port Costa, June 26 – 15-year-old Joe Padilla and his sister, Inez, 10, were fishing off the docks at port Costa yesterday with a group of children.
Inez lost her balance while reeling in her line and plunged into the swift currents of Carquinez Straits. Joe didn't wait to take off his hat. He dove in. Inez went under, pulled by the currents. Joe kept diving for her body.
It was several minutes before nine-year-old Frank Trump thought to summon aid. He ran a quarter-mile to the port Costa brickworks where he informed workman who called the sheriff to launch a boat.
But it was too late. Inez had drowned and Joe had died a hero. Their bodies were not recovered.
