A graveside funeral service will be held in the West Side District Cemetery in Taft on Thursday, August 11, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. for Hazel Mickey, 94. Mr. F will officiate. Viewing will be held on Wednesday, August 10, 2011, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home. Hazel M. Mickey, also known as Mickey or Grandma Mouse, went to be with our Lord on August 2, 2011 in Grand Junction, CO. Hazel lived in Taft most of her life until 2009 when, at the age of 92, she moved with her daughter to Grand Junction. CO. She loved adventure and wanted to travel and see the world; she was like a hobbit. Hazel was born in Chadron, Nebraska on February 27, 1917 to her parents, Sam and Lilly Cook. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Eugene Mickey; her brothers, Walter and Robert Cook; and her sister, Ruth Northway. She also had many good friends that have passed before her and will be waiting for her with open arms. Hazel worked at West Side District Hospital for 35 years in the OB department. She helped deliver and care for over half the babies born in Taft during those years. After Hazel retired from the hospital, she went back to work for 12 more years at the nursing home, finally retiring at the age of 75. Hazel saw life begin and life end during her 47 years of nursing. Hazel is survived by her three children, brothers and their wives, sister and her husband, nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Hazel's biggest pleasure in life was watching all her grandchildren grow and being an active part in their lives. Special thanks to Erickson & Brown Funeral Home. The family would also like to thank the special team of nurses, April, Dan, Betsy and Angie from Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado who helped take care of Hazel in her final days. If you would like to make a donation in Hazel's name to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado you may visit www.hospicewco.com or they may be sent to 3090 N. 12th St., Unit B, Grand Junction, CO 81506. We all love and will miss Hazel, but it's not good-bye, it's until we meet again.
