Grietje Siekman was born in September1847 in the country village of Uithuizen, located in the northern part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen, daughter of Hindrik Adolfs Siekman and Johanna Pieters Snijders.

On March 29, 1873 she married at the age of 25 years at her birthplace Uithuizen the two years older iron smith Jan Bos. Her parents are then both farmer.

On April 19, 1893 Grietje and her husband Jan Bos, laborer, and their children Jan (17 years old), Aaltje (16), Klaas (13), Anna (9), Adolf (7) and Martje (4) arrived on the SS Maasdam at New York, Ellis Island. Their last residence place in the Netherlands was Spijk, a country village in the former municipality Bierum, since 1990 part of mun. Delfzijl, lobated in the northeastern part of the province Groningen, and their destination was Bozeman, seat of Gallatin County, located in the southwestern part of Montana.
