MRS SARAH SHAFFER KEENE AGE 87
DIED LAST WEDNESDAY


Sarah Smith Shaffer was born in Clark County Ohio April 28 1826. And after an illness of twenty - one weeks died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs Paul Harker 414 Hornbeck Ct, Kalamazoo. Sarah came to Michigan with her parents Peter and Sarah Thomas Shaffer at age 7. She was the youngest daughter of a family of seven children, and was preceeded in death by her parents and her three brothers; Henry, Col George Thomas Shaffer, and Abraham Shaffer. and her three sisters Mary Shaffer, Alcey Shaffer Keene, and Nancy Shaffer. She was married August 3 1853 to John H. Keene of Cassopolis to which union were born seven children, three of whom survive her.

She was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church of Mason and a woman of unusual culture. Her loss will be keenly felt. She leaves to mourn her her husband John H Keene and three children; Mrs Paul Harker Kalamazoo, Mrs O.D. Myers of Ann Arbor, and Clark Keene of Dowagiac; also six grandchildren and two great grandchildren, Ethel Keene Curtis and Glenda Keene of Dowagiac, Maurice C. Myers of Chicago, Harold C. Myers of Ann Arbor, Franz L. Harker and Hazel Harker Godfry, Robert and Jean Godfrey of Kalamazoo.

Funeral Services were held in Kalamazoo, conducted by Rev. Arbo Martin, and the interment was at the Shaffer Cemetery outside Cassopolis were Rev. S.W. Large conducted a brief service.
