Mattie Kelly was the young daughter of James Searchfield Kelly and his wife Mary Mahala Stewart Kelly. Born in West Virginia, she came west to Iowa with her brothers, was married to George Washington Fletcher, lost a child, and had a mental breakdown. She was sent to the Independence Hospital where she died only a couple of months later of "consumption" or Tuberculosis. It is told that her husband later took away her stone to use on another person's grave (?!) so recently a Kelly descendent replaced her stone in Harrison Cemetery. I believe the stone reads "Mary Matilda Kelly and child."
