Josephine "Sis" Pemberton passed away at York Hospital on Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at the age of 93.
She was born on August 27, 1917, in Abbottstown, a daughter of the late Harry and Geneva (Rutter) Anthony.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, George M. Thompson, who died in 1972, and her second husband, Ferris J. Pemberton, who died in 1989. She was also predeceased by her three brothers, Bernard H. Anthony, Frederick R. Anthony, and Francis "Piney" Anthony.
She is survived and was dearly loved by her sisters, Regina A. Wagaman and Mary Shuman; sister-in-law, Joyce Anthony; as well as her first husband's relatives from Cincinnati, Ohio, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews and their extended families.
Following graduation from Delone Catholic High School, she pursued a nursing career that commenced with graduation from Misericordia Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia. Following graduation, she worked as a school nurse at Rosemont College.
She joined the U.S. Army Corps of Nurses, serving in World War II as a General Duty Nurse in Central Europe. She obtained the rank of 1st Lieutenant and received an EAME ribbon for her service. Following her tour of duty, she moved with her husband, George, to Cincinnati, Ohio, where she worked as an industrial nurse. In 1965, she and George moved to Baltimore, Md., where she commenced work at Johns Hopkins Hospital. At Hopkins, she was the Student Nurse Coordinator for numerous years and in the latter part of her career, she worked in the Dermatology Department at Hopkins as a specialized nurse until she retired in 1980.
After her first husband died in 1972, she married Ferris J. Pemberton in 1975 and they resided in Towson, Md. They enjoyed many years traveling together and making trips to York to visit relatives.
Following his death, she moved to York to be near her family and joined St. Mary's Church where she was active in the St. Mary's Women's Societies and Adult Choir until her physical condition declined. She was also a member of the Golden Nuggets and the Catholic Women's Club, enjoying many social events. In the latter years of her life, she resided at Country Meadows at Leader Heights where she made new friends and participated in various activities.
Most important to her was time spent with her family. Over the years, she thoroughly enjoyed celebrating various holidays at the homes of her nieces and nephews, as well as many visits from her dedicated and loving family in the York and New Oxford area. She was deeply loved and will be missed by all who knew her.
Her family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the personal care assistants at Country Meadows and all others who cared for her in recent years. Most especially, we thank the caring staff at York Hospital for their compassionate care in the last days of her life.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's Church, 309 S. George St., York, PA 17401 with the Rev. Robert M. Gillelan, Jr. as celebrant.
Interment will take place at Gettysburg National Cemetery. There will be no viewing.
